Throughout the month of September we have been getting used to our classroom routines, learning about ourselves and our new friends, and exploring all the different centers. Children are encouraged to play in the different areas of the classroom, trying out the various activities that are available each week. Currently our classroom has the following centers: Art, play dough, math, literacy, dramatic play, sensory table, science, blocks and building, listening center, and a game table. Below are a few examples of the children in some of the different centers.
It was a great year! Best wishes to all my friends moving on to Kindergarten and new classrooms! Have a wonderful summer:)
It has been so much fun getting outside and enjoying the playground and feeling the spring air!!! We have been talking a lot about the characters, setting, and the sequence of the stories that we read. Our district Literacy Curriculum Coordinator, Jamee Callahan, came in to our classroom to help us learn about what good readers do when listening to a story. Thinking and talking help us understand the story. She modeled turn and talk with the group. The children did a great job telling their partner about what they were thinking while listening to the story. Center Time Fun!!!
Over the past few weeks we have been reading and talking about Fairy Tales. We read The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Jack and The Beanstalk. During center time we:
Lots of fun turning our classroom into everything Dr. Seuss. The dramatic play area served up lots of tasty treats at the Green Eggs and Ham Cafe. The game center had us moving in all directions. We built truffula trees at the play dough table and practiced drawing shapes at the writing center. Our STEM activity was figuring out how to build the tallest tower with different size cups an index cards. Small Group Time!
Over the past few weeks during our small groups we:
Lots of fun digging for dinosaur bones, measuring, and working together to build different dinosaurs.
Winter has arrived outside and in our preschool classroom! We started our Winter theme by decorating our classroom with lots of blue snowflakes that sparkle in the sun. We read the Missing Mitten Mystery by Stephen Kellogg and created our own snowmen to go along with the story. We also read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. We talked about what we like to do in the snow and created our own character like Peter in the book. The project will be sent home in your child's folder today.
All our centers have been transformed into a winter wonderland. Lots of fun skating on our preschool ice rink and ice fishing. We also have a classroom igloo with many arctic animals around. Don't Break The Ice was a hit at our game table and everyone loved chopping ice at the sensory table. Our math center focused on introducing a 10 frame and creating different number values. During small groups we worked on cutting practice, shape naming and sorting, and writing letters in snow. We have been spending a lot of time working with our names. Each child has his or her own name folder. We are working on saying the letters, building, and writing our names. We will continue this practice throughout the school year. We are also working on using the correct grip when we color and write. The Get Set For School curriculum uses a fun song to help practice this skill. In Math we are working on 1:1 correspondence and understanding number value. At the Literacy center we have been tapping out syllables in words.
Mr. Ken the Music Man comes to our classroom once a month to sing, dance, and play instruments. He is always a big hit! Mr. Ken will visit again this Tuesday 1/15.
