To celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America we have integrated all things Dr. Seuss into our classroom this month! At the play dough center we made birthday cakes for Dr. Seuss and at the writing center we Seuss-a-fied prewriting strokes! Both classes loved reading Put Me In The Zoo and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish and doing various activities related to each story. To celebrate Read Across America each class had a reader from the community stop by to read a story. The morning class had another preschool teacher from Beginning Years visit our classroom. The afternoon class had Dr. Richard Crowell from Medfield Veterinary Clinic visit. He brought a special guest from his office for the children to see!
We are more than half way through the Fundations curriculum. I have introduced the letters A-N. If anyone would like another copy of the letter and keyword sounds please let me know. Below is an example of a matching activity where children can pick a plain letter and match it to the correct picture card. Both uppercase and lowercase letters are included.
A new addition to our Fundations time is the Baby Echo helper. Each child will have a turn to hold Baby Echo and point to the different letters, as the class repeats the letter, sound, and keyword associated with each card. Lots of practice building and writing our names and the different letters we have learned. Children who are moving on to Kindergarten next year will begin part two of the Fundations curriculum next week. I will begin introducing lowercase letter writing.
Math centers this month included shape sorting and building a snow person out of the different shapes. We used different color blocks to build towers of various heights. This lead to conversations about height, which towers are tall and which are short. Lots of number recognition practice playing Number Hopscotch. Everyone enjoyed fishing for letters at the sensory table. Each child visited the ABC center to play a rhyming match game. Lots of building and fixing at the preschool workbench.
Lots of fun in our preschool bear cave in the dramatic play area!
