The children came back from break to find snow in the sensory table! Our first project of the New Year was reading the Missing Mitten Mystery by Stephen Kellogg. The children recreated the snowman from the story putting their own twist on the design. We jumped right back into the groove of things after the break! In the math center the children are filling the pages with the correct number of snowballs. Great number and fine motor practice. I added erasable crayons to the writing center where we are rotating number and letter writing practice. The play dough center has all the props you need to build a decked out snowman or snowlady! A new task I added to the beginning of circle is name building. Each child has a bag with his or her name card and the letters of their name. Before we begin our circle time, the children take out the letters and practice building their names. Welcome to the Preschool Hot Cocoa Stand! After the break the dramatic play center was transformed into a hot cocoa stand. When playing in the dramatic play area children learn negotiating, problem solving, sharing and taking turns, self confidence, sustained attention, idea representation, abstract thinking, and the idea that print has meaning. Concluding The Five Senses UnitThe final project of our unit on the five senses was each child made his or her own book giving an example of one thing they could see, hear, smell, touch, and taste. The song we learned is in the front cover of the book. Ask your child to sing it for you!
The month of December was filled with a variety of activities based around Gingerbread. In the art center we made our own gingerbread paint adding cinnamon and nutmeg to get the real smell of gingerbread baking! The block center was filled with characters from the different versions of the The Gingerbread Man stories we read. The children were able to recreate the story with the characters as well as create their own scenery. The math center was a big hit with Gingerbread Number Roll. The children took turns rolling dice then searching for that number on his or her gingerbread man.
