During the month of December many of our centers and activities will have a Gingerbread Theme. We will read many versions of the Gingerbread Man including one of the originals by Karen Schmidt, which we read yesterday. In the block center the children have the opportunity to retell the Gingerbread Man in their own words, using foam blocks and the different characters from the story. Our sensory table is filled with beans and our dramatic play has been transformed into a post office, where we can make and mail holiday cards to our friends and family.
We are also beginning a Five Senses Theme to go along with the holiday season. Recently we read the books, Mouse Mess by Linnea Riley
and I Know an Old Lady who Swallowed a Pie by Alison Jackson. Both books helped practice sequencing skills and recalling details from a story. After reading Mouse Mess, we did a project where the children had to follow visual directions to create their own mouse and decide what it ate. During the month of November our centers had a Thanksgiving theme. We worked on:
During the month of November our class celebrated the Thanksgiving season talking about sharing and friendship. This all came together with a Friendship Feast on 11/21. We read the book, Bear Says Thanks, by Karma Wilson. Bear's cupboard is empty so he can't throw the party he had hoped. With the help of his friends each bringing something over to contribute to the celebration, everyone had a blast. Each child in the class had the opportunity to add something to our Friendship Mix. During snack time we all sat down for a celebration of friendship and shared the snack mix that we made together.
Mr. Ken comes to visit our classroom throughout the year to sing, play his guitar, and let us use simple instruments like bells, shaker eggs, and drums. The afternoon class had a visit from Mr. Ken yesterday. The morning class will see him on 12/14.
During small group time over the past few weeks we have been working on.......
Lots of exploring, creating, and building literacy and math skills during centers this fall! Everyone loved sand writing letters with "witches fingers" at the writing center. Spider math was a big hit! The children tried to put the correct number of spiders on each plate. The art center was filled with pumpkin and leaf activities. Our new fire station is always busy on the building rug, and all my friends loved working at and visiting the Preschool Apple Orchard! The ABC center had fall words with pictures so the children could practice "reading" each card. This center is helping build vocabulary and begins to teach the concept that letters make words and words have meaning. At the "must do" table last month the children used problem solving skills to build their own apple tree. They were asked to use the materials to create a tree and see how many apples they could balance.
