We have been learning about and talking all things winter over the past few weeks. Some books we have read are, The Missing Mitten Mystery by Stephen Kellogg, Penguin and Pinecone by Salina Yoon, and The Mitten and The Hat, both by Jan Brett.
A new song we learned is, The Snowkey Pokey, a winter take on the Hokey Pokey. During centers this month we were working on: Art: making snow people, creating winter scenes, making snowflakes for our classroom, QTip painting Math: number matching and recognition, 1:1 correspondence through a winter board game, introduction of a 10 frame to build number sense, beginning graphing, size order using mittens Dramatic Play: Preschool Hot Coaca Stand ABC: Icy Alphabet letter matching and writing, sequencing a story using pictures, name building and writing Blocks and Building: Firehouse with people and trucks, wooden blocks, and Mr. Potato Head Sensory Table: water and snow puddy with arctic animals Play dough: building a snowman, finding gems in balls of play dough. Starting in January, as the children arrive in the classroom they are asked to answer the Question of the Day. They get excited to see what I will ask each day. This activity builds and practices a variety of math and literacy skills including beginning graphing, counting, and mathematical language such as more, less, and equal too. We practice reading the question together each day which helps develop early literacy skills including name recognition, the idea that print has meaning, tracking print in a sentence, and using a picture to help understand the text. See the pictures below for examples. Lots of practice with name recognition, naming the letters in our names, name building, and name writing. Over the next couple of weeks the children will have a completed name folder. They will have daily practice with their name at their current level. As part of our social emotional learning curriculum, We Thinkers, we have been talking about thoughts and feelings. We read the book Glad Sad Monster by Ed Emberley. We talked about all the different feelings the monsters had and why. The children had the opportunity to create their own monster based on how they were feeling that day. To go along with this, our class is building a Kindness Tree to promote acts of kindness in our classroom, at home, and in our community. (detailed letter will go home on Tuesday)
