Some songs we have been singing include Preschool is the Place for Me, Shake your Sillies Out, The Shake Break, ABC Rock, and The Number Rock.
Books we have been reading include If You Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff and Mouse Paint by Ellen Still Walsh. We are in the process of making mouse masks to go along with the book. We are finishing up our theme All About School. Up next is All About Me! Learning how to use scissors and glue, how to paint on the easel, exploring the playdough center and dramatic play, examining the tools in the writing center, playing with magnets at the science center, and practicing our circle routine.
Over the past three weeks we have been busy learning all about our classroom, exploring and learning how to use all the materials and toys. The children are starting to know each others names and our routines.
Two programs we use in preschool are Handwriting Without Tears Get Set For School and Fundations. HWT describes their program as a play-based curriculum that offers a full pre-writing program and materials that build critical skills like early math and literacy. It includes three programs designed to prepare children for school: Readiness & Writing, Language & Literacy, and Numbers & Math. We began the introductory activities last week. Concepts we have practiced so far include same and different, learning to shake hands, distinguishing between a variety of environmental and speech sounds, and distinguishing between letters and pictures or other symbols. Fundations is an introduction to letters and sounds. Baby Echo, our class owl, introduces a letter, sound, and keyword each week. So far I have introduced A, B. Below are examples of some of the activities that go along with HWT. We had a great first week of school! We are spending time exploring the classroom, meeting new friends, and learning the routines. Who Stole the Cookie, is always a favorite class song and a great way for the children to start to learn each others names. Some books we read this week were Froggy Goes To School by Jonathan London and Monster Goes to School by Virginia Mueller. |
