Starting in January, as the children arrive in the classroom they are asked to answer the Question of the Day. They get excited to see what I will ask each day. This activity builds and practices a variety of math and literacy skills including beginning graphing, counting, and mathematical language such as more, less, and equal too. We practice reading the question together each day which helps develop early literacy skills including name recognition, the idea that print has meaning, tracking print in a sentence, and using a picture to help understand the text. See the pictures below for examples. Lots of practice with name recognition, naming the letters in our names, name building, and name writing. Over the next couple of weeks the children will have a completed name folder. They will have daily practice with their name at their current level. As part of our social emotional learning curriculum, We Thinkers, we have been talking about thoughts and feelings. We read the book Glad Sad Monster by Ed Emberley. We talked about all the different feelings the monsters had and why. The children had the opportunity to create their own monster based on how they were feeling that day. To go along with this, our class is building a Kindness Tree to promote acts of kindness in our classroom, at home, and in our community. (detailed letter will go home on Tuesday)
