Mat Man was introduced last week during circle time. He is a character that is part of the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. Mat Man is built using the wood pieces that will later be used to build the different letters of the alphabet. Each piece has a name that the children are learning. There is a big curve, little curve, big line, and little line. Moving forward these are the names that we use when talking about each piece. Mat Man teaches the children how to build and draw a person. They are learning about body parts and where they go. Each day one child is chosen by pulling a name from the "helper bag" and asked to be the Helper of the Day. Their job is to be the line leader, calendar helper at circle, and to set the table for snack. Each child will have multiple opportunities to be the helper throughout the year. The children get very excited when I pull the name. I love to give different clues as to who the helper is each day, while the children try and guess.
