During the month of December both classes learned about the different ways people celebrate holidays around the world. We learned the different vocabulary, customs, and traditions associated with Las Posadas, Diwali, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas, and we will end the unit this month with Chinese New Year. Our classroom activities incorporated the different symbols and customs of many holidays. For example, the children had the opportunity to build the different symbols of the holidays using snap cubes and play dough, we practiced symmetry using Rangoli art which is part of Diwali, we worked on rhyming with the help of a pinata used during Las Posadas; and math concepts including more and less when adding cotton balls to Santa's beard. We also played the Dreidel game when talking about Hanukkah It was a lot of fun hearing about different families own special holiday traditions! Thank you for sharing! Gingerbread was also a theme in our classroom this month. The children really enjoyed reading many versions of The Gingerbread Man, comparing and contrasting the different characters and endings. The Gingerbread Cowboy was a favorite all around! During explorations time the children were very busy in the Preschool Post Office. There were lots of packages to be wrapped and letters to be mailed! The writing center was also a busy place making cards and letters for family and friends. Lots of cookies were rolled out and baked at the play dough center. We ended a busy month relaxing in our PJ's and making gingerbread houses. Happy New Year to everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the winter break and the holiday season! Snow Day Fun!!!
